PCB nominates economist Edmilson Costa for Brazil's 2026 presidential race
The Partido Comunista Brasileiro (PCB) held its national convention on 1 August in the São Paulo Municipal Chamber, where it officially approved economist Edmilson Costa as its presidential candidate for the October 2026 election. Costa, a PhD in economics from Unicamp with a post‑doctoral stint at the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences, will run on a pure‑party ticket with professor Cleusa Santos as his vice‑presidential running mate. The PCB platform calls for the statisation of the financial system, the creation of a “Bank of Workers”, suspension of public‑debt payments, re‑nationalisation of companies and expanded state control over exchange rates, foreign trade and taxation. The party has until 15 August to register the candidacies. In addition to the presidential ticket, the convention also announced Carlos Machado for the São Paulo governorship and Petter Maahs for the Senate, underscoring PCB’s broader electoral strategy.
