Brazil's Curitiba and Rio de Janeiro Face Planned Water Supply Outages
A large‑scale maintenance operation by Sanepar is affecting water distribution in Curitiba, Paraná. Four city neighborhoods – Campo de Santana, Tatuquara, Umbará and the Industrial Zone (CIC) – experienced supply interruptions on July 21, with full service expected by the afternoon of July 22. Similar scheduled works are also affecting the interior of Paraná, including municipalities such as Pato Branco, Icaraíma, Roncador, Assaí, Douradina and Ortigueira, where reservoir cleaning and network repairs will cause partial or complete cuts.
In Rio de Janeiro, the water concessionaire Cedae began preventive maintenance on the Guandu system on July 21. Production was reduced to about 50% of normal capacity, leading to total shutdowns in numerous North Zone neighborhoods (e.g., Acari, Anchieta, Barros Filho) and reduced pressure or temporary interruptions in many South Zone and central districts. The water supply may remain limited for up to 72 hours, with priority truck deliveries to hospitals and emergency units and a recommendation for residents to store water in advance.
