Brazil's CVM proposes pilot for securities tokenization
The Brazilian Securities and Exchange Commission (CVM) has submitted a proposal to its board to conduct a 60-day pilot program testing the tokenization of securities using distributed ledger technology (DLT). The simulation aims to verify the entire lifecycle of digital securities, including issuance, registration, trading, settlement, and custody.
The pilot will involve various financial instruments such as stocks, corporate bonds, receivables, and investment fund shares. To ensure safety and prevent market disruption, the test will use virtual assets and simulated transaction data; no real securities or investor funds will be utilized during the process.
Managed by the Tokenization Working Group (GTT), the initiative seeks to identify technical, legal, and operational challenges, such as smart contract errors, cybersecurity risks, and interoperability between different ledgers. While Brazil's central bank has previously tested the Drex platform for digital payments, this CVM initiative specifically focuses on the issuance and trading infrastructure of the capital markets. The results will inform future regulatory frameworks and potential legislative improvements.
