Brazil's Distrito Federal Governor Celina Leão Gives Senate Slot to MDB

Governor Celina Leão (PP) of the Distrito Federal announced that one of the two Senate seats on her 2026 re‑election ticket will be allocated to the Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB). The decision, reached after weekend meetings with MDB leaders such as national president Baleia Rossi and regional chief Wellington Luiz, positions federal deputy Rafael Prudente as the leading MDB candidate for the Senate.

The agreement ends weeks of tension between the MDB and the governing base, reshapes the ticket by removing a slot previously reserved for the PL, and aims to secure the MDB’s support for Leão’s re‑election bid. Conventions for the MDB and PL‑DF are scheduled for early August, where the final candidate list will be confirmed.
