Brazil's Distrito Federal gubernatorial race gains momentum

Former district deputy Cristiano Araújo is focusing his pre‑campaign for the 2026 elections on Taguatinga, a major commercial hub in the Distrito Federal that he cites as a key electoral base. Over recent months he has held community meetings, visited entrepreneurs and strengthened links with local leaders to expand his support network.

A poll released by Instituto Paraná Pesquisas shows PP candidate Celina Leão currently leading the race for the Distrito Federal government with 34.6% of voter intention, followed by former governor José Roberto Arruda (PSD) at 28.1%. When Arruda is excluded from the scenario, Leão’s share rises to 45.9%. Other candidates include PT’s Leandro Grass (11.9%), PSB’s Ricardo Cappelli (4.5%), PSDB’s Paula Belmonte (3.6%) and Novo’s Kiko Caputo (1.3%). Rejection rates are highest for Arruda (27.9%) and Leão (26.3%). Left‑wing parties are still debating strategies to strengthen their own candidates ahead of upcoming party conventions and coalition talks.
