EBC files legal action to protect election‑time news reporting
The Executive Board of Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC) announced on 10 July that it will file a preventive injunction request with Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE). The suit seeks a ruling that the agency’s regular journalistic output through Agência Brasil, characterized by editorial autonomy, technical verification, source plurality and strictly informational content, is not to be treated as institutional advertising under the country's election law. If the court does not accept this interpretation, EBC asks the TSE to establish objective criteria to distinguish editorial news from public‑service advertising, thereby providing legal certainty for its coverage during the electoral period.
EBC emphasizes that Agência Brasil supplies news to thousands of media outlets across Brazil, and that safeguarding the flow of verified information is essential for the public’s right to information during elections.
