Brazil's Education Ministry Announces $227 Million Hospital Project in Ceará

The Ministry of Education (MEC) visited the construction site of the Hospital Universitário da Região do Cariri (HU‑UFCA) in Juazeiro do Norte, Ceará, on 31 May. Minister of Education Leonardo Barchini highlighted the R$227.2 million investment – with R$200 million coming from the Novo Programa de Aceleração do Crescimento (Novo PAC) – as a key element of the federal effort to expand higher‑education and health‑care infrastructure.

The new university hospital, covering more than 20,000 m² on a 67,000 m² campus, will provide high‑complexity adult services, intensive‑care units, a full range of specialties such as cardiology, oncology and neurology, and advanced imaging facilities. Completion is slated for the end of 2028 and is expected to serve the Cariri region’s 1.5 million residents across 45 municipalities, strengthening regional health access and training for university students.

The project forms part of a broader R$2.5 billion MEC programme in Ceará, which includes new creches, schools, university campuses, and dozens of new health‑related courses, aiming to improve both education and health outcomes throughout the state.
