Brazil's Election Authority and YouTube Tackle Deepfake Threats

Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE) approved amendments to election propaganda rules ahead of the 2026 general elections. The new regulation bans the use of deepfakes, requires clear labeling of AI‑generated content, and holds candidates and internet platforms liable, with penalties that can include cancellation of a candidacy or removal from office.

YouTube has expanded its AI‑generated video detection system to a pilot program for government officials, political candidates and journalists. Using facial‑similarity analysis modeled on Content ID, the platform lets verified users view detected matches and request removal of synthetic videos. YouTube stresses that the tool is “not about systematic censorship but about providing a control tool to those most exposed,” while still protecting parody and free expression. The initiative aligns with legislative efforts such as the U.S. NO FAKES Act to curb unauthorized AI‑based impersonation.
