Brazil's Electoral Court creates commission to curb illegal AI use in elections
On 25 May 2026, the president of Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Minister Nunes Marques, convened the first meeting with the presidents of the regional electoral courts (TREs) since taking office. The participants agreed to establish a permanent commission tasked with overseeing the responsible use of artificial intelligence in electoral campaigns. The commission will compile a national catalogue of solutions, work with universities that specialize in digital‑crime forensics, and aim to complete its initial work within 90 days.
The TSE also ordered TREs to create their own information‑security units within 30 days and announced plans to meet political parties to reaffirm compliance with election rules. This follows a March 2026 court decision that barred AI providers from suggesting candidates to users, a measure intended to prevent algorithmic interference in voters’ free choice.
