TSE creates advisory council to monitor AI and disinformation for 2026 elections
The Tribunal Superior Eleitoral (TSE) has established the Conselho Consultivo sobre Integridade Informacional to monitor the use of artificial intelligence and the spread of disinformation during the 2026 election campaign. The council will advise TSE President Kassio Nunes Marques and will be composed of multidisciplinary experts in fields such as technology, public security, international relations, and public health. The group is scheduled to hold monthly meetings from August until December 31, 2026.
The initiative follows rules approved by the TSE in March regarding AI in electoral processes. These regulations permit the use of AI in campaign materials provided they are clearly labeled as synthetic. However, the TSE prohibits AI providers from suggesting candidates to voters via algorithms. Additionally, a strict ban is in place from 72 hours before to 24 hours after voting that prohibits the use of new synthetic content that modifies a candidate's voice or image, even if labeled.
To combat digital misogyny, the TSE has also prohibited the publication of manipulated images of female candidates involving nudity or pornography. Internet service providers may be held legally liable if they fail to remove illegal posts or fake profiles as directed by the court.
