Novo party seeks revocation of Lula and Alckmin candidacies
The Novo Party has filed an Electoral Judicial Investigation Action (AIJE) with the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) seeking the revocation of the candidacies of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Vice President Geraldo Alckmin. The party is also requesting that both be declared ineligible for eight years.
The legal action alleges abuse of economic power and misuse of communication media during the Carnival parade of the Acadêmicos de Niterói school, which featured a theme honoring Lula's political history. Novo contends the parade functioned as an early election promotion effort funded by approximately R$ 9.65 million in public resources, including contributions from the municipalities of Niterói and Rio de Janeiro, the state government, and Embratur.
The case is currently under the review of TSE rapporteur Minister Antonio Carlos Ferreira. The government has denied that public funds were specifically intended for the parade or to influence the theme.
