Brazil's electricity bills rise with new yellow tariff flag and higher regional rates

In May, Brazil activated a new yellow tariff flag as drought‑related reservoir drops forced the use of more expensive thermal power plants. The flag signals higher production costs, which are reflected in higher monthly electricity bills. Consumers are advised to reduce shower time, use cooler water, improve appliance efficiency, and take advantage of natural light to curb spending.

Separately, the national regulator ANEEL released the 2026 tariff ranking, showing Rio de Janeiro's distributors charging the highest rates (up to R$1.47/kWh) while Rio Grande do Sul records the lowest (around R$0.41/kWh). Recent ANEEL approvals lifted tariffs for eight distributors by 5%‑15%, driven by increased contributions to the Energy Development Fund, which rose to R$52.7 billion. The published tariffs exclude taxes and the flag surcharge, which adds roughly R$0.018/kWh under the yellow flag.
