Brazil's electricity tariff flag remains yellow for August

The Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica (Aneel) confirmed that the electricity tariff flag will stay yellow throughout August, marking the fourth consecutive month of this designation. All consumers connected to the Sistema Interligado Nacional (SIN) will continue to pay an additional R$ 1.88 per 100 kWh on their electricity bills.

Aneel explained that the yellow flag reflects less favorable generation conditions caused by a dry period, which lowers reservoir levels at hydroelectric plants and forces the activation of higher‑cost thermoelectric units. The tariff‑flag system, created in 2015, uses green, yellow and red colors to signal the variable cost of electricity production based on the monthly assessment by the Operador Nacional do Sistema Elétrico (ONS).
