Brazil's EMS launches Ozivy, first domestically produced semaglutide pen

EMS has introduced Ozivy, the first semaglutide (GLP‑1) pen manufactured in Brazil, after approval by ANVISA. The drug, intended for adults with type 2 diabetes, uses the same active ingredient as Ozempic but is not classified as a generic. The initial launch makes 500,000 pens available, with a production capacity of up to 40 million units per year at the company's Hortolândia plant, reflecting an investment of more than R$1.2 billion.

Ozivy is priced at R$452 per pen in pharmacies, while participants in the company’s “Vida + Leve” program can obtain the medication for R$287 per month during the first three months, rising to R$498 thereafter. Distribution began nationwide on 15 June 2026, with early stock reaching major pharmacy chains and regional outlets such as those in Minas Gerais and Paraíba. The launch follows the March 2026 expiry of the Ozempic semaglutide patent, opening the market to domestic producers.

The medication must be prescribed by a physician, and patients are advised on weekly administration and potential side effects, which include nausea, diarrhoea, and decreased appetite.
