Brazil electricity tariff hikes trigger consumer complaints and regulator postponement
The Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica (ANEEL) approved a tariff increase for the Rio Grande do Sul distributor RGE that took effect on 19 June, raising average bills by 16.06% (about 14.94% for low‑voltage residential customers). In Minas Gerais, consumers of Cemig have also faced higher electricity bills during colder months. The utility operates a dedicated phone line to help customers understand charges that may stem from longer showers, electric heaters and extended lighting use.
Meanwhile, ANEEL postponed the vote on the annual tariff adjustment for Equatorial Pará. The pending proposal would have increased rates by 7.6% for Pará customers, with roughly 61% of the tariff—known as "Parcela A"—covering costs unrelated to distribution such as energy purchases and transmission fees.
