Brazil's Federal Council of Medicine authorizes platelet‑rich plasma therapy

On July 15, the Conselho Federal de Medicina (CFM) issued resolution 2.464/2026, formally authorizing the use of platelet‑rich plasma (PRP) as a complementary medical procedure. The regulation permits PRP for four osteomuscular conditions: knee osteoarthritis, lumbar discopathy, lateral epicondylitis of the elbow, and meniscal repair.

The resolution sets strict criteria: the treatment must be prescribed after a medical diagnosis, individual clinical evaluation, and exclusion of contraindications. PRP may only be prepared from the patient’s own blood, processed according to ANVISA standards, and applied by physicians holding a specialist qualification in the relevant area, within hospitals or day‑hospital units equipped for the procedure. The CFM bans the inclusion of drugs, stem cells, bone‑marrow concentrate, or micro‑fragmented fat, and prohibits advertising PRP as a cure or guaranteed regenerative therapy.

CFM President José Hiran da Silva Gallo emphasized that the update follows scientific advances while safeguarding patient safety, providing clear technical parameters for ethical practice.
