Brazil's Federal Court of Accounts Plans Luxury Homes for Ministers in Brasília

The Tribunal de Contas da União (TCU) intends to construct two new official residences for its ministers on vacant lots in Lago Sul, one of Brasília's most expensive neighborhoods. The parcels were transferred by the Union in 2024 and are located along the shores of Lake Paranoá, where property prices often exceed R$15,000 per square metre and neighboring homes feature amenities such as pools, tennis courts and private football fields.

The project is still in the preliminary study stage; no public bidding process has begun and the TCU has not disclosed an estimated cost. In a reciprocal arrangement, the court has committed to refurbish two federal properties in Belém under a technical cooperation agreement with the Secretaria do Patrimônio da União (SPU). Currently the TCU maintains four functional apartments in the Asa Sul district, three of which are occupied by ministers.

The plan has drawn public attention because it expands the list of high‑value functional housing available to the court's nine ministers, raising questions about the use of public funds for luxury accommodations.
