Brazil's Federal District launches Elderly Protection Council

On 31 July 2026 the Federal District of Brazil enacted Law 7.933/2026, creating the Council of Protection for the Elderly. The council is tasked with safeguarding the rights of people aged 60 and over, especially those facing vulnerability, violence, neglect, discrimination or other rights violations, in line with the Elderly Statute, the Federal Constitution and the District’s organic law.

The five‑member body will work alongside the district’s Child and Youth Guardianship Councils, the Secretariat of Social Development and other institutions. Its duties include receiving and investigating complaints, referring cases to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Public Defender’s Office or police when needed, monitoring public policies for the elderly, overseeing care facilities, and promoting educational campaigns on elderly rights. Members are elected directly by the community for four‑year terms, with the possibility of one renewal, and must have experience in social assistance, psychology, law or health.

The council’s creation was spearheaded by Deputy Jaqueline Silva (MDB) and aims to integrate and strengthen public policies that protect Brazil’s aging population within the Federal District.
