Brazil's Federal District leads 2024 average salaries

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) reported that the Federal District recorded the highest average monthly salary in 2024, at R$ 6,845.13, far above the national average of R$ 3,932.45. Rio de Janeiro ranked second with R$ 4,501.35 and São Paulo third with R$ 4,423.04.

The most lucrative sectors were international organizations (R$ 9,678.61), electricity and gas (R$ 8,539.07), and financial services (R$ 8,430.55). The lowest‑paid sector was accommodation and food services at R$ 2,080.17. A gender gap persisted, with men earning an average of R$ 4,206, 16.6 % more than women’s R$ 3,608. Education also mattered: workers with higher education earned R$ 7,776.59 on average, versus R$ 2,742.41 for those with only secondary schooling.

The survey covered about 10.6 million formal firms employing roughly 68 million people, of whom 54 million are salaried. Companies with 250 + employees pay an average of R$ 4,913.27, while the public sector offers the highest wages for both men and women.
