Brazil's Federal District offers free eye and dental care to children in Itapoã

The Olhar Cidadão program, run by the Federal District’s Secretariat of Justice and Citizenship and executed by the NGO Líderes do Brasil, provided free ophthalmological and dental services to children and adolescents aged 6‑17 who attend public schools. The mobile unit operated in Itapoã, in front of the Ultrabox, until 26 June, offering eye exams, glasses, cataract screening, dental cleanings, restorations, extractions and oral‑hygiene kits. Over 6 000 students are expected to be served across nine regions of the district.

Executive Thayzza D’Ávila noted the initiative began on 19 January and has visited several neighborhoods, including Estrutural, Sol Nascente and Samambaia. After Itapoã, the project will move to Ceilândia (29 June‑10 July) and then to Arapoanga to conclude the 2026 edition. Parents reported improved self‑esteem and reduced need for costly private care, highlighting the program’s impact on health and schooling outcomes for vulnerable families.
