Brazil's Federal District Police Crack Down on Data Theft Ring and Street Robbers

On July 30, the Polícia Civil do Distrito Federal (PCDF) executed Operation Dark Spot, dismantling a criminal organization that sold confidential personal data of Brazilian citizens. The raid included four arrests (three preventive, one temporary) across São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul and the Federal District. Authorities seized assets and crypto worth up to R$2 million. The ring operated a digital platform offering access to tax, driver‑license, court and security‑agency records, handling over 18 million queries from more than 257 k IP addresses between May 2023 and June 2024, and reportedly moving over R$450 k in illicit funds in four months.

In a separate PCDF operation the same day, two men aged 22 and 24 were arrested for a series of armed robberies in the Arniqueira neighborhood of the Federal District. The duo used a motorcycle without plates and a firearm to threaten victims, stealing phones, bags and documents. Surveillance footage helped trace their route to Águas Claras. Police recovered the bike, a replica pistol, helmets and stolen items during the raid.
