Brazil's Federal District reports record 56,000 surgeries while ambulance tender is suspended

The Federal District of Brazil performed more than 56,000 public‑hospital surgeries in 2025, a historic record attributed to the "Opera DF" initiative that shifts simple procedures to partner private hospitals and accelerates treatment for complex cases. The programme helped cut wait times dramatically, with varicose‑vein surgeries dropping from over 1,000 days to about nine days and hernia operations falling from more than two years to 50 days.

Separately, the Tribunal de Contas do Distrito Federal suspended a R$101 million ambulance procurement tender issued by the Institute of Strategic Health Management (Iges‑DF). The suspension followed allegations that the winning bidder, Litoral, lacked the mandatory vehicle inspection certificate and had a liquidity ratio below required levels. The court’s liminar halted the contract, and Iges‑DF later declared the bidder ineligible, prompting a new tender process.
