Brazil's Federal Medical Council Approves PRP Use for Orthopedic Conditions

A new resolution (No. 2.464/2026) from the Conselho Federal de Medicina (CFM) took effect on 15 July 2026, removing plasma‑rich‑platelet therapy (PRP) from the experimental category and authorising its use as a complementary procedure for four osteomuscular conditions: knee osteoarthritis, lumbar discopathy, lateral epicondylitis of the elbow, and meniscal repair. The regulation, published in the Official Gazette, revokes the 2015 resolution that limited PRP to research protocols and establishes strict criteria for indication, patient consent, documentation, safety monitoring and prohibits claims of guaranteed tissue regeneration.

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Gabriel Ferraz highlighted that the change provides physicians with clear normative backing to offer PRP within the specified indications, reflecting growing scientific evidence and standardisation of the technique. The rule aims to improve patient access while ensuring professional responsibility and traceability.
