Brazil's Federal Prosecutor's Office advances indigenous rights in Coari and Yanomami regions

On July 16, the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office (MPF) signed a cooperation and commitment term with the municipality of Coari in Amazonas. The agreement sets actions to guarantee constitutional rights for riverine and indigenous communities, focusing on education, school meals, community participation and the procurement of food produced by local families, with payment deadlines and mechanisms for community representation.

Separately, the MPF opened a civil inquiry into a R$15.7 million contract between the Ministry of Labor and Employment and Unisol Brasil for solid‑waste removal in the Yanomami Indigenous Land. The contract is also under review by the Federal Court of Accounts after a 2025 suspension of payments due to unclear goals and monitoring gaps. The investigation seeks documents and explanations to assess possible irregularities.
