Brazil's FGTS fund to distribute over R$13.5 bn profit to workers in 2025

The federal government expects the Fundo de Garantia do Tempo de Serviço (FGTS) to generate a profit exceeding R$13.5 billion in 2025, according to officials from the Ministry of Labor and Employment. The Curator Council of the FGTS will meet at the end of July to set the percentage of that profit to be transferred to workers, with indications that the figure will be close to the 95 % allocated in 2024, when R$12.9 billion was distributed. By law, the credit must be posted to eligible accounts by 31 August.

All employees who had a balance in their FGTS account on 31 December 2025 are entitled to receive a share, regardless of the amount held. The deposited sum is added to the linked account and cannot be withdrawn freely, remaining subject to the FGTS withdrawal rules (housing purchase, retirement, serious illness, dismissal without cause, etc.). The fund yields 3 % per year plus the reference rate (TR); after a Supreme Court ruling that FGTS remuneration cannot fall below inflation (IPCA), profit distributions are used to keep returns above price growth.

Recent distributions have been substantial: in 2023 the fund recorded a profit of R$23.4 billion; in 2024, R$15.2 billion—65 % of that year’s profit—was paid out, the highest amount since the profit‑sharing scheme began in 2017. The Curator Council has historically approved the government’s proposals unanimously, and the Ministry of Labor and Employment will present its recommendation to the council in the upcoming July meeting.
