Brazil's financial sector scales Open Finance and eyes AI-driven payments

Brazil's financial ecosystem is undergoing a significant transformation driven by Open Finance and the potential integration of artificial intelligence in payments. During the Febraban Tech event, industry leaders highlighted that Open Finance has reached a stage of maturity, with over 220 million consents accepted and more than 120 million accounts involved as of June. The sector is now aiming for 300 million permissions and 60 million API calls.

The focus of the industry is shifting from technological scale to delivering tangible value to consumers. Experts emphasize that for Open Finance to succeed, institutions must prioritize trust, data reliability, and applied intelligence.

Looking ahead, the evolution of digital payments is expected to move toward 'invisible' transactions. Following the success of Pix, the next cycle involves autonomous AI agents capable of initiating purchases and analyzing credit through algorithms. This shift raises new challenges regarding privacy, data protection, and the need for transparent and predictable transaction models within the Brazilian banking system, which currently handles approximately 240 billion transactions annually.
