Brazil's First Lady Janja Cleared of TCU Investigations into International Trips

Brazil's Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) archived two investigations into First Lady Rosângela Lula da Silva, known as Janja, over alleged irregularities in her international travel. One case examined a September 2025 trip to New York for the UN General Assembly, while the other, filed by former deputy Carla Zambelli, questioned public spending on Janja's support team. The TCU concluded that the trips were conducted under specific decrees, that the presidential household provided administrative support, and found no elements indicating misuse of public funds.

Janja responded to criticism by emphasizing that her travel served diplomatic and social agendas, noting she travels in executive class for security reasons and describing the backlash as "pure misogyny." The court's decision ends the legal scrutiny of her overseas trips, which together total nearly six months of diplomatic engagements.
