Brazil to overhaul national football team midfield for 2030 World Cup

Brazilian media and former players are urging a wholesale renewal of the national squad after a disappointing World Cup performance. Former star Neto and other veterans have labelled the current generation as “failed” and “mediocre,” while several longtime internationals have announced they will not return to the team.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and newly appointed coach Carlo Ancelotti are planning a strategic reform focused on the midfield, identifying new options for the 2030 tournament cycle. The plan includes scheduling at least four matches in 2026 and examining the overall squad composition.

Fans have taken their frustrations to the streets, staging protests with banners outside the CBF headquarters in Barra da Tijuca. The combined pressure from the public, media criticism and veteran departures is shaping a broader discussion about the future direction of Brazil’s football program.
