Brazil's Future Fuel Law targets R$ 260 billion in sustainable investments

Brazil’s ‘Future Fuel Law’ has established a new regulatory framework for sustainable fuels, with the potential to mobilize approximately R$ 260 billion in investments by 2037. According to Minister of Mines and Energy Alexandre Silveira, the legislation provides legal certainty for decarbonization projects, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), green diesel, and biomethane. The policy is expected to generate roughly 200,000 jobs and prevent the emission of 705 million tons of greenhouse gases.

While the carbon market gains momentum, Brazil faces challenges in other sustainability sectors. The country holds a 6% share in the global carbon credit market, which moves US$ 100 billion annually. However, Brazil’s circular economy rate stands at just 1.3%, the lowest among major emerging economies. Experts note that corporate investment is increasingly favoring carbon credits due to clear regulatory structures, such as the Brazilian Emissions Trading System (SBCE), whereas circular economy initiatives struggle with high credit costs and a lack of structured financing.
