Brazil's GLP-1 drug market expands as prices drop and parallel sales surge

Brazil’s market for GLP‑1 medicines, such as semaglutide sold under brand names Poviztra and Extensior, is rapidly expanding. A study by data‑analytics firm Scanntech estimates that about 50% of the GLP‑1 doses in circulation since late‑2025 are obtained from the informal or parallel market, driven by high prices. The same analysis notes a 239% increase in overall GLP‑1 consumption in the first quarter of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025.

Eurofarma announced price reductions effective 30 May 2026, lowering the initial dose price to R$295 and offering up to 48% discounts through its EuroCuida patient‑support program. The company says more than 200 000 patients have enrolled in the program.

Separate research highlights health benefits of GLP‑1 agonists, including a study showing reduced mortality, hospitalisations and amputations among diabetic patients with peripheral arterial disease, and another indicating a possible slowing of biological ageing in a small HIV cohort. A U.S. study found households using GLP‑1 drugs cut food spending by about 5% after six months, with larger declines in fast‑food purchases.

A survey of Brazilian physicians suggests that the introduction of generic GLP‑1 products could raise the share of patients able to afford treatment from 28% to 45%.
