Brazil's Green Agenda Week targets fast‑track of 30,000 environmental court cases

On Monday, June 8, Brazil’s federal and state courts launched the “Semana da Pauta Verde,” a nationwide drive organized by the National Council of Justice (CNJ) to accelerate the processing of environmental lawsuits, especially those with large collective impact. The initiative includes mutinies, hearings and conciliations and aims to review more than 30,000 cases covering basic sanitation, solid‑waste management and pollution. CNJ estimates over 5,000 federal and about 26,000 state cases will be examined, with a focus on landfill and waste‑site issues. Councilor Ilan Presser warned, “The theme could not be more urgent… Brazil still has more than 3,000 landfills in operation.”

Meanwhile, the municipality of Bento Gonçalves is running its own “Semana do Meio Ambiente” through June 19, featuring tree‑planting, animal‑adoption campaigns, seedling distribution and an “Agentes Ecológicos Mirins” project that will train 90 primary‑school students in environmental education. Activities also include guided tours of the Dárvin João Geremia Biological Reserve and social‑media content creation on waste‑separation and reverse‑logistics.
