Anvisa to approve up to eight new GLP‑1 weight‑loss pens in 2026
The Brazilian health regulator Anvisa announced that it expects to approve up to eight additional liraglutide or semaglutide pens by the end of 2026. The agency says the new registrations will expand the market, lower prices and improve access to the medicines, while also helping to curb the illegal trade of unregistered pens, especially those smuggled from Paraguay. Currently Brazil has 21 GLP‑1 pens authorised; six of the 24 pens listed in the agency’s priority programme have already received registration, five were rejected and 13 remain under analysis, with one likely to be approved in August 2026. Director‑president Leandro Safatle stressed that greater competition “generates lower prices and reduces the space occupied by the illegal market.”
In parallel, the Ministry of Health has asked Anvisa to prioritize the review of new GLP‑1 products so they can be considered for the public health system. A pilot study called Real‑Bari, started in late June at a hospital in Porto Alegre, is providing free semaglutide injections to 250 patients with severe obesity who are awaiting bariatric surgery. The agency also plans to sign an information‑sharing agreement with Paraguay’s drug regulator to combat contraband of these pens.
