Brazil's Congress shows low environmental alignment for 2027-2031 term

An analysis by the Observatório do Clima reveals that the 58th Legislature of the Brazilian Congress (2027-2031) will have a significant lack of alignment with environmental and climate agendas. According to the study, 68.9% of the elected senators and deputies are classified in the 'low' or 'very low' environmental convergence categories.

The Senate shows a particularly high level of divergence, with 79% (64 out of 81) of senators lacking alignment with conservation and climate change mitigation efforts. In the Chamber of Deputies, 67.3% (345 out of 513) fall into the low or very low convergence categories. This represents a worsening compared to the previous legislature.

Suely Araújo, Public Policy Coordinator at the Observatório do Clima, warns that this political shift could lead to legislative setbacks, such as the weakening of environmental agencies, the reduction of protected biomes, and amnesty for land grabbers. The growth of the Liberal Party (PL) is noted as a factor in this shift, with its presence increasing significantly in both houses.
