Severe Storms Damage Over 20 Cities in Rio Grande do Sul

Intense thunderstorms with hail and wind gusts up to 100 km/h swept Rio Grande do Sul from July 17‑19, affecting at least 21 municipalities. The storms caused roof damage, fallen trees and power outages, leaving 10 people displaced and prompting alerts for flooding, landslides and the possibility of isolated tornadoes. A metal sheet torn from a roof killed a motorcyclist in Salto, Uruguay, as the same severe system moved across the border. State Civil Defense issued orange warnings for the affected towns and warned of up to 300 mm of rain in some areas. Neighboring Paraná also placed more than 200 municipalities under an orange vendaval alert, with wind speeds up to 100 km/h, urging residents to avoid trees and power lines.
