Brazil's Inmet issues wind and storm alerts as cyclone approaches

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued a series of weather alerts for Poços de Caldas and its surrounding region for the weekend of 7‑9 May. The alerts include a storm warning with possible hail, strong winds of 40‑60 km/h, and a low‑humidity warning, all classified as low‑risk for power outages, crop damage, or flooding but advising the public to stay alert.

Simultaneously, Inmet maintained orange‑level wind alerts for 11 Brazilian states—Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Bahia—due to an extratropical cyclone that formed near the Brazil‑Uruguay border. The system is expected to generate gusts up to 100 km/h, posing risks of tree falls, roof damage, and losses to agriculture and exposed structures across the affected areas.
