Brazil's INSS launches special pension for children of femicide victims

The National Institute of Social Security (INSS) issued Portaria PRES/INSS nº 1961, establishing a special pension for children and dependents of women murdered in femicide. The benefit provides a monthly payment equal to one minimum wage (R$ 405.25) and aims to protect minors left without a family provider.

Eligibility requires applicants to be under 18, financially dependent on the deceased, and to have a per‑capita family income of no more than a quarter of the minimum wage. Proof of the femicide must be supplied, such as a police report, criminal investigation, or final court decision. The pension is granted through the Meu INSS portal or the 135 call center, is retroactive to the filing date, and continues until the beneficiary reaches legal adulthood, subject to specific regulations.

The measure distinguishes itself from the standard death pension by its assistential nature, targeting the social vulnerability created by gender‑based violence. Required documentation includes birth certificates, identification, CPF, proof of income, and evidence of the crime. The initiative reflects Brazil’s broader effort to mitigate the socioeconomic impact of femicide on families.
