Brazil's INSS sets June 20 deadline for refunding unauthorized benefit discounts

The federal government issued a provisional measure to speed up INSS processing, cutting the inclusion period for administrative and judicial‑expired cases in the Benefits Management Programme (PGB) from 45 to 30 days. The change aims to increase the agency’s operational capacity and reduce the backlog of pending requests.

Separately, retirees and pensioners must contest any unauthorized associational discounts on their benefits by June 20. Contestations can be filed through the Meu INSS app or website, the 135 phone line, or in person at post‑office branches that began assisting beneficiaries on May 30. The government’s restitution agreement has already returned more than R$ 3.2 billion to about 4.7 million people. Those who file a contest and receive no response—or encounter irregular documentation such as forged signatures—will be automatically eligible to join the agreement and receive corrected payments within three business days. Indigenous peoples, quilombola communities and beneficiaries over 80 years old receive refunds automatically, without needing to opt in.

The deadline is critical: without a contest, beneficiaries lose the right to participate in the administrative reimbursement process.
