Brazil Pays Extra Refunds to Retirees and Disburses Bolsa Família to NIS‑9 Beneficiaries
The National Social Security Institute (INSS) began issuing extra refunds to retirees and pensioners whose benefits were wrongly deducted between March 2020 and March 2025. More than R$ 3.2 billion has been returned to about 4.7 million people, with payments released within 72 hours after the beneficiary signs the agreement. Around 656 thousand eligible recipients are still awaiting payment because they have not completed the required signature.
On Monday, June 29, Caixa Econômica Federal paid the June installment of the Bolsa Família program to beneficiaries whose Social Registration Number (NIS) ends in 9. The minimum payment is R$ 600, while the average amount rose to R$ 677.66, covering 19.34 million families and totaling roughly R$ 13.08 billion. The payment includes the basic benefit plus three supplemental components: a nutritional variable benefit for mothers of infants, an additional R$ 50 for pregnant or nursing women, R$ 50 per child aged 7‑18, and R$ 150 per child under 6. A unified early‑payment schedule was applied to 207 cities in eight states, benefiting 124 municipalities in Rio Grande do Norte affected by drought and other municipalities facing rain or indigenous vulnerability.
