Brazil's iCS launches R$4 million grant for community climate adaptation

The Institute Climate and Society (iCS) in Brazil has opened a public call with a R$4 million budget to finance community‑led climate‑adaptation projects. The call targets Indigenous, quilombola, rural, peripheral‑urban and coastal communities in seven states – Alagoas, Bahia, Ceará, Minas Gerais, Pará, Paraíba and Pernambuco. Up to ten proposals will be selected, each receiving between R$200 000 and R$700 000 for a maximum period of 18 months. Applications are accepted until 1 July.

Projects must be designed through participatory processes and address climate impacts already observed in the territories, such as heat waves, prolonged droughts, floods, landslides and forest fires. Universities and public research institutions can participate as technical partners providing scientific and methodological support.

iCS aims to strengthen local resilience and contribute to the Global Goal on Adaptation under the Paris Agreement. The institute’s engagement manager, Tatiana Lobão, said, “A adaptação não acontece apenas em grandes planos ou infraestruturas. Ela acontece também nos territórios, na vida concreta das comunidades que já convivem diariamente com secas, enchentes, ondas de calor e outros eventos climáticos extremos.”
