Brazil's June campaign targets elder abuse and road safety
During the “Junho Prata” (June Silver) campaign dedicated to combating violence against older people, the Detran of Mato Grosso do Sul organized a safety action on 17 June at the Elias Lahdo Senior Center in Campo Grande. More than 40 seniors attended lectures on traffic safety, accessibility, mobility and how to seek help against physical, psychological, financial and abandonment abuse. Students from the Maestro Frederico Liebermann State School presented silver ribbons, symbolising the campaign, and reinforced inter‑generational respect.
Separately, Professor Manoel Freire highlighted a rise in elder‑abuse cases, noting increasing digital scams, financial exploitation and neglect, often perpetrated by family members. He stressed the need for greater public awareness and stronger protection networks, citing the creation of the National Network for the Protection and Defense of the Elderly (RENADI) to coordinate public agencies and civil society across Brazil.
