Brazil launches multiple campaigns to combat rising elder abuse

Local authorities across Brazil are holding events as part of the “Junho Prata” (June Silver) and “Junho Violeta” (June Violet) campaigns to raise awareness of violence against the elderly. The campaigns feature cultural activities, health talks, safety‑traffic lessons and protection workshops in cities such as Três Lagoas, Campo Grande, Gravataí, Bento and other municipalities. Police in Três Lagoas warned seniors about scams, while the Detran of Mato Grosso do Sul provided traffic‑safety training for more than 40 older adults.

National data show a sharp increase in reported elder‑abuse cases: the Ministry of Human Rights recorded 75,700 complaints in the first four months of 2026, a 29.9 % rise over the same period in 2025, bringing the total since January 2024 to over 435,000. Officials emphasize the need for continued education, reporting mechanisms such as Disque 100, and stronger institutional protection for Brazil’s rapidly aging population.
