Brazil’s literary scene sees new book launch and Netflix‑driven sales boost

Writer Ângela Chaves, known for TV series such as Pedaço de Mim, released her short‑story collection *Histórias de Ferro e Pedra* at the International Literary Festival of Paraty (Flip) 2026. The book reimagines Rio de Janeiro’s statues, fountains and plazas as characters in fantasy tales, drawing inspiration from a real incident involving the Inverno statue in the city’s public promenade.

A NielsenIQ study commissioned by Netflix shows that adaptations of Brazilian books for the streaming platform have sparked dramatic increases in book sales, with some titles selling up to eight times more than before. Examples include the miniseries *Pssica* and the nonfiction work *Todo Dia a Mesma Noite*, whose sales multiplied more than threefold, and Valter Hugo Mãe’s novel *O Filho de Mil Homens*, which saw a seven‑fold rise. Netflix, a sponsor of Flip 2026, plans further adaptations and highlights the partnership between literature and audiovisual media as a catalyst for the cultural ecosystem.

Both stories underscore a growing synergy between Brazil’s publishing world and streaming services, boosting author visibility and reader engagement.
