Brazil's Lula government coordinator rejects austerity and social spending cuts

José Sérgio Gabrielli, coordinator of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s government program, has rejected calls for austerity and cuts to social spending. Gabrielli dismissed claims of a fiscal crisis in Brazil as “fake news,” citing low unemployment, falling inflation indicators, and stable international reserves as evidence of economic stability.

Gabrielli argued that a government committed to fighting inequality cannot accept market proposals to freeze minimum wage increases or alter mandatory spending rules for health and education. Instead, he suggested improving efficiency in public spending and reducing ineffective subsidies.

These statements come amid growing market concerns regarding Brazil’s fiscal trajectory. Since 2023, the government's gross debt has increased by more than 10 percentage points, reaching 82.5% of GDP. While the administration maintains that its fiscal responsibility is high, official data shows a pattern of recurring deficits, with a cumulative deficit of R$ 81.3 billion recorded through July.
