Brazil's Machado de Assis Prize and FLIP Book Launch Spotlight Literary Scene

Writer Cristovão Tezza, 73, received Brazil's prestigious Machado de Assis prize at the Brazilian Academy of Letters in Rio de Janeiro. In his interview he remarked, “If writing is the greatest pleasure of my life, why the hell would I outsource my writing to a machine?” Tezza plans to resume work on his next, untitled novel after the ceremony.

At the 24th International Literary Fair of Paraty (FLIP), author and sociologist Carolina Santos launched her award‑winning collection Bocas Mestiças. The book, which won the 2nd Tato Literário prize for short stories, weaves twelve years of writing into a mosaic of identity, ancestry and resistance in contemporary Brazil. Santos participated in a panel on classism, racism and social ascent before signing copies of her work at the historic Casa Ópera.
