Brazil's Maringá Hospital launches sepsis‑early detection software

The University Hospital of Maringá (HUM) received registration for a new computer program that identifies patients at risk of developing sepsis early. Developed by researchers from the State University of Maringá (UEM), the software was certified by Brazil’s National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) on 7 July. Sepsis, a severe inflammatory response to infection, led to 67,663 hospital admissions in Paraná between 2010 and 2020, with over 10,000 cases in Curitiba alone; a 2024 study found that one in 14 patients hospitalized for sepsis in the capital died.

The platform lets clinicians track at‑risk patients, automatically calculate clinical scores, access treatment guidelines and consult the institutional sepsis protocol. Researchers say it standardises care, speeds decision‑making, reduces complications and lowers treatment costs. Following validation, the system is expected to be adopted by other hospitals, emergency units and intensive care wards across the region.
