Brazil's Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul Record Economic Gains

Mato Grosso joined the group of Brazil's ten largest state economies, moving from 13th to 10th place in GDP rankings. The state's GDP rose from R$ 142.1 billion to R$ 273 billion between 2019 and 2023, a 12.9% increase that far outpaced the national growth rate of 3.2%. Agriculture remained the main driver, with soybean production climbing to 51.6 million tonnes and corn to 54.6 million tonnes, while the state now supplies about 73% of Brazil’s sesame. Mato Grosso also leads national ethanol production from corn, accounting for roughly 62% of output.

In Mato Grosso do Sul, the average salary for formally employed workers reached R$ 3,798.16, placing the state fifth in Brazil’s wage ranking. Although this figure is slightly below the national average of R$ 3,932.45, it keeps the state among the higher‑paying regions, behind only the Federal District, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
