Brazil Ministry of Education issues new art teaching guidelines

The Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC) has officially implemented new national guidelines for art education in basic schooling. Published in the Official Gazette, these regulations treat art as a fundamental field of knowledge rather than a mere recreational or complementary activity. The guidelines, approved by the National Council of Education (CNE), complement the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC).

Under the new framework, art education must be structured around four specific curricular components: visual arts, dance, music, and theater. These components are to be integrated from early childhood education through high school. The policy aims to move away from improvised or purely celebratory uses of art, instead emphasizing creative processes, critical reflection, and historical and cultural contextualization.

Educational networks are tasked with defining balanced workloads, with a requirement to implement at least two of these artistic components per year. The goal is to foster integral human development, including cognitive, social, and aesthetic growth, while promoting interdisciplinary connections with subjects like mathematics, physics, and Portuguese. Schools have until the end of the 2026-2036 National Education Plan to complete the implementation of these changes.
