Brazil's MPE seeks to block Binho Galinha's re-election candidacy
The Public Prosecutor's Office (MPE) has requested that the Regional Electoral Court of Bahia (TRE-BA) deny the re-election candidacy of Deputy Binho Galinha. The prosecution alleges that the deputy is the leader of a criminal organization and cites a state court conviction exceeding 36 years for crimes involving illegal possession of firearms, including restricted-use weapons and ammunition with altered serial numbers.
According to the MPE, the criminal group—linked to investigations such as Operation El Patrón—is accused of engaging in illegal gambling, usury, money laundering, and corruption of minors. The deputy is currently a defendant in four criminal actions. The defense has stated they have not yet been formally summoned regarding the challenge and maintain there is no legal basis for the impugnation of the candidacy.
