Brazil's MPF addresses human rights and community protections

The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) is conducting several initiatives focused on human rights, equity, and the protection of traditional communities in Brazil.

In Rio de Janeiro, the MPF is hosting the 2nd Interinstitutional Congress to Combat Discrimination and Promote Equity. The event brings together various public institutions and partners to discuss diversity, gender violence in the workplace, rights for the autistic community, and quilombola rights.

In Araruama, Rio de Janeiro, the MPF is investigating the Quilombo Sobara community following reports of threats, coercion, and socio-environmental risks, including lack of potable water. The agency has requested inspections to investigate potential slave-like labor conditions and seeks protection for community leaders.

In Rondônia, the MPF has petitioned the Federal Court for urgent measures to protect extractive families in the Jaci-Paraná Extractive Reserve. The request follows reports of death threats, gunfire, and the illegal presence of cattle ranching activities within the conservation unit.
