Brazil's NR-1 Regulation Expands Workplace Psychosocial Risk Management

The updated Norma Regulamentadora 1 (NR‑1) in Brazil now incorporates psychosocial risks into the Occupational Risk Management framework. Companies must address mental‑health factors such as workload overload, harassment, discrimination and unclear role definitions, integrating them into safety and health strategies rather than treating them as optional initiatives.

A national survey by the Instituto Livre de Assédio and AAPSA found that 74% of Brazilian firms still have low maturity in handling these risks, with the most common concerns being excessive workload (28%), role ambiguity (18%) and moral or sexual harassment (15%). Experts stress that human‑resource departments need dedicated tools, training and structured reporting channels to meet the new legal demands. Leaders from firms such as BEM emphasize that compliance is less about paperwork and more about fostering a preventive culture, supported by AI‑driven platforms that track indicators and enable early intervention.
